Acrylic Nails vs Gel Nails
Acrylic nails are more popular in the U.S. while gels have
the upper hand in Europe. Acrylic nails can be whole or partial,
which means you can choose to cover the entire nail or just
the tips. Spa Villa applies a mixture of liquid acrylic and
an acrylic powder which hardens in a few minutes.
Either product
may be applied in clear or permanent pink and white.
A mixture of liquid (monomer) and powder (polymer)
is applied to the nail. It hardens quickly, and forms the acrylic
nail. We at Spa Villa do not use MMA (methyl methacrylate)
which is banned by the FDA and is found in many nail shops
today. We also use a technologically advanced acrylic system
that is primerless (an acid) so as not to damage the nail.
Gel nails are thin and clear enough to be applied as natural
nail overlays. Gel nails look natural; their flexibility helps
them last longer. They can also be tip overlays and can be
sculpted.
Here are some pros and cons of acrylic and gel nails. If you
want professional help in choosing, Spa Villa's nail technicians
can help you make your hands look their best.
Pros of Gel & Acrylic
Nails
Gel Nails
- Gel nails often look more natural and glossy than other
types of cosmetic nails.
- The curing time is faster than acrylics, sometimes
clocking in at just two minutes when light-curing is
done.
- Gel nail mixtures are odorless.
- There is less filing involved during the application
process.
Acrylic Nails
- If you break an acrylic nail you can almost always
fix it temporarily and rather easily yourself.
- The removal process is simple and straightforward
if done by a professional. The nails can be soaked rather
than filed off.
- Acrylics are very strong. When done correctly and
good nail care is practiced, they can last a long time.
They’re robust!

Cons of Gel & Acrylic Nails
Gel Nails
- They don’t last as long and are less durable
than acrylic, even though they tend to cost more.
-
It’s been noted that nail polish won’t stick
to the gel finish as well as it does to an acrylic finish.
- If a gel nail breaks, you may be in for some trouble.
It can sometimes be more of a shatter effect than a clean
break, so self-fixing a break is not usually an option.
You’ll need to make an appointment right away with
your manicurist. Sometimes they do break cleanly; basic nail glue could be
used in that case.
- Gel nails almost always need to be filed off. You
can’t just soak them
away.
Acrylic Nails
- They can damage your real nails in a harsher manner
than gel nails can.
- Acrylics can look fake instead of natural.
- It can be hard to grow out acrylic nails.

There are many variables when it comes
to gel nails, acrylic nails, natural nails and everything in
between that your best bet is to ask a trusted tail
technician at Spa Villa.

your feminine side with a subtle flower, nail art can help
define your look.
Nail art can by applied to one or all of your fingernails
or toenails, providing you with a speciual accent that is painted
on your nails after the final finish of nail polish. Choose
a freehand design of small flowers, swirls, or stars in your
very own color choice. Be unique and creative!
